Always Eat After 7 PM- Book Challenge Part II

As most of you know, I’ve been working on a brand campaign for a book called Always Eat After 7 PM: The Revolutionary, Rule-Breaking Diet That Lets You Enjoy Huge Dinners, Desserts, and Indulgent Snacks-While Burning Fat Overnight, by Joel Marion.

Now, let’s jump in to Part II…


I never thought I would sign up to work with a brand that would completely change my way of looking at the way I eat.  But honestly, this opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time in my life.  I don’t know if you are the type of person that believes in signs, but I am.  Not in a crazy “hocus pocus” way.  But I do believe that if something keeps popping up in my life over and over again, I should probably pay attention.

Tomorrow is my last day to be 36 years old and as I sit here and reflect back on the last year, I realize that the gut instinct I’ve been feeling for the past several months couldn’t be more accurate.

Let me explain…

First up: I had a baby.  (YAY!)  She’s absolutely gorgeous and I couldn’t feel more blessed to be her momma.  My labor and delivery had no complications and she entered this world as easily as she possibly could have.  However, in my second trimester, we did have some issues and I was put on bed rest for ten days and light duty for the remainder of my pregnancy.  Although there was nothing I could have done to prevent my pregnancy complications, that was probably the first time I ever considered making my physical health a priority.

Next, I have a family member that recently passed away.  While I wish I could sit here and tell you that she died of natural causes, that wasn’t the case.  Her death was addiction induced and, if you’ve never watched someone circle the drain of addiction, let me tell you this: it’s one of the worst things in the world to witness.  Especially when it happens to someone you love.  This was someone I looked up to  and respected.  But seeing her go from mentor to addict changed me.  Addicts think their demons will never kill them…until they do.  And then the loved ones, who had somewhat expected something like this to happen, are still left in disbelief when it actually does happen.  I have another close family member who has neglected her physical health so much that it is a downright-almost-impossible chore for her to attend a family function and actually be “present”.

And lastly, on top of the global Covid-19 pandemic, I found out a few weeks ago that I’m having heart problems.  For those of you who don’t know, I had a pacemaker implanted in 2004 for a heart disease that I have.  The generators on a pacemaker usually last 8-10 years, and I have already had the generator replaced once.  It is now time to change it out again and when I went in to do a routine echocardiogram, they found some things.  The left side of my heart is working at 65%.  Anything above 55% is considered okay.  However, the right side is concerning.  It is enlarged, dialated, and has a severe leak.  I went through a procedure last week that helped my cardiac team determine that one of the current leads from my pacemaker is causing the problem.  Since, I’ve had the leads for so long (2003), they are all intertwined with muscle and scar tissue now.  It’s almost as if they are just a part of me.  The surgery to remove the lead is complicated, delicate, high risk, and can be life threatening.  My doctors want to avoid that operation at all costs, so they are considering going in, leaving the lead where it is, and wrapping a “band” around my heart to stop the leak.  This is still considered open heart surgery, but it puts me at a lot lower risk than the lead removal surgery.  Also, they believe the lead has already done permanent damage and, chances are, removing it wouldn’t cure my condition anyway.  I will find out more on June 11 about which surgery we have decided to move forward with and when it will be scheduled.

Whew.  That was a lot.  But I promise I’m getting to my point.

Between my pregnancy complications, losing my loved ones, a global pandemic, and my heart condition, every single ounce of energy in my body is telling me I need to take better care of myself.  Remember what I said earlier about signs?  I feel like God and the universe have conspired together and are screaming at me to get my shit together.

And then BOOM!  This book falls into my lap.

I’m quickly learning that to take care of your body, you have to get to know your body.  Always Eat After 7 has helped me do exactly that.  I might as well forget everything I’ve been told or thought I knew because guess what guys!  Most of it is inaccurate!  It’s like I have to learn how to eat healthy all over again and this book has been the perfect guide.  My favorite part?  It’s not a trend diet.  It’s an actual lifestyle diet.  That’s something I can get on board with all day, err day.

And that’s what my goal is on this journey.  Not only to get down to my goal weight (thanks for the extra work, quarantine).  But to change my lifestyle habits when it comes to eating. I’m not just doing this for me.  I’m doing this for my children, too.  My family members I mentioned earlier?  While those women taught me some very useful life lessons in my childhood, they’ve also been an excellent example of what not to do.  You guys, I don’t want to live like that.  I don’t want to die like that.  The cycle stops with me.  I have to make sure of that.
